[edit] December 12th — Soviet Union Dissolved - two years later - Russian Federation Formed

December 12, 1991: Following a failed military coup aimed at preserving the Soviet Union, the USSR was dissolved.

December 12, 1993: The constitution of the Russian Federation was ratified.
